Chapter 10
I opened my eyes to see the day was dark and rainy. Great. It matched my mood. I sat up and looked at the clock, trying to stretch out the last few hours of sleeping in a car. I looked sleepily at Riley, who had a broad smile on his face.
âMorning Callie,â he began, barely stifling a laugh. âDid you know that you talk in your sleep?â I could feel a blush coming on and I snapped awake. Seriously, if I survived today, I needed to put an end to the sleep talking. It wasnât the first time itâs happened to me. My parents and Sara had caught me in the act before, and I could only imagine what heâd heard me say.
âYeah, I know.â I sighed, bracing myself. âSo, what did I say?â I kept a straight face even though I wanted to hide in embarrassment. His smile grew even broader. Ugh, why did he have to have such a great smile?
Once again, the stupid connection that we seemed to have was making my hormones go a little crazy. Or maybe I was just using our weird bond as an excuse. I felt like a bad person when I didnât put the blame on the weird bond. A girl shouldnât have the feelings that I have towards two different guys I barely knew. Using the strange hold they have over me as an excuse was the only way I felt less crazy, so I ran with it.
âWell, you asked a question,â Riley said, clearly amused. I was a little wary but still wanted to know how bad it was. I waited, and Riley went on.
âI heard you say my name. At first, I thought you were awake. When I noticed that you were still asleep, I just listened to see what you would say. I believe it went something like⦠Riley, I bet if I ran my hands through your hair it would feel as soft as it looks. Then you actually put your hand in the air and acted like you were grabbing something.â He had to catch his breath from laughing.
âOh my Celestia,â I muttered and put my face in my hands. Damn my obsession with nice hair. And damn my stupid hormones! But he wasnât finished.
âAfter you were done grabbing the air you got serious, but it was kind of cute. You asked me if I would give you your first real kiss.â I was mortified and shook my head in my hands, not meeting his eyes. Of course, the asleep version of me would ask something like that. In my defense I was dreaming, and what else were dreams for? Riley stopped laughing then and I looked up as his face became solemn. He bit his lip, which seemed to be a nervous tic of his. âBut then you said that you just wanted one real kiss before you died today.â I was hit with a wave of sadness and guilt. I could tell he was at war with himself.
